The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. Englishman and officer in the navy of the Republic of Texas. Son of an English naval commander, Downing H. Crisp served on the Brutus during 1837, was a second lieutenant on the Austin during the naval cruise of 1840-1841, charted the Tobasco River aboard the San Bernard from May to Oct., 1841, and was promoted to lieutenant and commanded the San Bernard in 1842.
